PODCAST

 Sam Parker
Football Family,

Our football program at Spring High School is taking great strides to be great.  The first phase of our off-season program was the Lion-Maker where we worked to build mental toughness and self image.  The process began the very first day I arrived at Spring High School, on January 11, 2010.  I could not have asked for for a better reception from our athletes. Both the freshman and the varsity athletic periods achieved their “perfect day.”  They have fought through each adverse situation with maturity and class.  The second phase of our off-season is more physical; we will work to make our athletes bigger, faster, and stronger.  We are putting them through a very strenuous weight workout ,as well as running drills, and mechanics each day.

We have some top-of-the-line additions to our coaching staff.  Coach Gary Jessie our new Defensive Coordinator, and he has already made a positive impact on our athletes.  He is coming from Cy Lakes High School, and before that, Ennis High School.  Another great addition to our staff is our  Offensive Line Coach and Assistant Head Coach, Buddy Blair.  He begins Monday, March 1, 2010.  Coach Johnny Rhodes has also joined our staff from Claughton Middle School.

We define maturity as the ability to sacrifice a short term pleasure for a long range goal.  My hope is for our athletes,  to see what they are capable of and work towards that goal, of becoming a GREAT football team.  This is going to be a strong group of “Road Builders”! Thank you for your support.

About Coach Parker
The Spring Lions have hired an energetic young coach in hopes of springing some life into their football progam.
Sam Parker, who is only 29-years-old, has been named Spring's new head football coach. Parker replaces Sonny Karas, who has decided to retire at the end of the 2009-2010 school year.

“I am very excited about this opportunity,“ said Parker, who was the offensive coordinator at John Tyler before coming to Spring. “This is my first head-coaching job. It is something you always dream about.“ Parker said he had applied for head coaching jobs in the past.

“I think God gives you things when you are ready for them,“ Parker said. “Now, I realized why I didn't get a few (head coaching) jobs I applied for. I would have never had the chance to get this one.“

After finishing his college playing career at North Texas, Parker has had assistant coaching stops at North Texas, Pflugerville, Ennis and John Tyler.

“I played under Coach Dickey at North Texas,“ Parker said. “I learned a lot about football from Coach Dickey.“

Parker has been the offensive coordinator at John Tyler for two years. In 2009, Tyler defeated Klein Collins in the regional quarterfinals before losing to Klein.

Klein and Klein Collins both are in District 13-5A with Spring.

“We beat Klein Collins, who was the district champ, then lost to Klein, who was the fourth-place team (in the district),“ Parker said. “In the playoffs, it is all about who is hot and who stays hot.“

Parker, who also will serve as the athletic coordinator at the Class 5A school, said he plans to build a complete program.

“We have to build a program from top to bottom,“ he added. “We have to change the self-image of everybody — athletes, coaches and everybody involved.

“I think it has become a situation here where it is OK not to be great,“ he added. “We have to change the self-image of the kids and the program. We have to continue to put systems in place to make that happen.“

Parker said he plans to raise the bar.

“We are going to demand excellence at all levels,“ he said. “We are gong to set the expectations high. I believe we have the kids to meet those expectations. I wouldn't come here if I didn't think we could win.“

Parker has been impressed by Spring's athletes since taking over on Jan. 11.

“From what I have seen so far, the athletes are here,“ he said. “It is a matter of motivation and appealing to athletes. We have to find a way to get them to believe in the program here.“

Parker plans to run the spread offense.

“The spread offense is based on the same premise,“ he said. “We will take what the defense gives us. If they put a lot in the box, we will throw it. If they put a lot outside, we will run it. It is pretty simple, really.“

He said defense is not so simple. He has named Gary Jessie as his defensive coordinator. Jessie was at Cy Lakes.

“Defense is completely based on personnel,“ he said. “No matter what our personnel is, we are always going to run the spread. But defense is different.

“I have hired a guy (Jessie) who is familiar with the 4-3, split and 3-4,“ he added. “We may move in and out of those if that is what we need to do. If you tell somebody to take a gun and shoot a target, it is easy. But it is not so easy if the target is moving.“

“I don't have any other coaching changes right now,“ Parker said. “We just have to figure out what system is in place now and then go about implementing our system. It will take some time, but I promise you we will get it done.“
